Damp and the drivers door

There has long been damp on the drivers door. Persistent use of Captain Trolley’s sealant might have improved things but the panel was damp and needed repainting.  I plucked up courage and, thinking the body between the drivers door frame and the window frame should contain a steel chassis member, was worried what I would find … lots of rusty metal.  A bit of judicious prodding led me to believe there was either no metal or it had rusted beyond recognition.  Gulp!

Further prodding a rooting led to the discovery of rotten wood – very rotten almost disappeared wood.  I piggled it all out and decided that rather than remove the door frame and window, I would see if I could get away with a repair from the inside.  I decided to add a ‘door post’ of mahogany and cut some to size.  I sealed it in place with non- setting mastic an d in addition to the door frame screws, added extra screws through the door and window frames and 90 degrees to the external ones.  The job looks good so far.
